Biography


Srishti Rana Menon was born in New Delhi in 1979. Belonging to an army family she travelled a lot in her formative years, while still largely being brought up in New Delhi. Srishti graduated in Textile Design from the National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad in 2002. Thereafter for many years she worked in the field of Textile Design.

Srishti was awarded The Charles Wallace India Trust Award by the Charles Wallace Trust and the British Council in 2004, allowing her to pursue a Masters course from Winchester School of Art, University of Southampton, UK, which she completed in 2005. Srishti was also the recipient of a ProHelvetia, Swiss Arts Council Residency in 2010 for Visual Arts. During this time, she was associated with Hochschule Luzern, Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts.

Her work was part of group show ‘BA 142- A Return Journey’, Queens Gallery, British Council, New Delhi (2004); ‘Fusion’, Group Show, Winchester School Gallery, Winchester (2004), â€˜Interactive’, Group Show, University of Portsmouth (2006). Srishti’s last solo show of Textile Art, ‘Recollections’ took place Luzern University of Applied Sciences and Arts, Switzerland (2011).

It was during her time in the UK and Europe that the exposure to museums, galleries and art fairs such as Art Basel, had a deep impact on her and led her to pursue a full time career as a painter.

Srishti currently lives and works in Gurgaon, India.

What my art means to me


My work can broadly be considered as abstract expressionist in nature. I draw my inspiration from within; it originates from an internal urge to connect to my subconscious. I believe that there is a universe within us that is boundless, vibrates and is a reflection of the ever changing universe outside us. By seeing the universe as an abstract construct and all of us as one energy field, I like to invite the viewer to have a profound experience when the paintings are viewed. Much of my work is drawn from the concept of oneness in Buddhism. Everything flickers in and out of existence like waves of conscious energy that take form and then join back into the source. All things, including us, are waves that rise and fall and go from one state to the other. Reality is not what it seems, it’s not stationary. The universal reality of all things is one of non- being, or formlessness.

Having roots in India along with exposure to art school in the UK and Europe, I like to see my work as grounded, yet contemporary and modern. My search for the core, for truth, beauty and elegance extends to my canvases. I try to make my paintings delicate, ethereal, cloudy, mystical, and of a world beyond. I also try to do away with recognisable imagery and narrative, thereby allowing a highly intuitive process that unravels on the canvas.

I usually allow my painting to grow in an organic manner. It is a long and absorbing process, where paint is the medium to explore the world within. The paintings draw from personal experiences, emotions, stories and meditations. I am inspired by the work of post-war American abstract expressionists such as Helen Frankenthaler and Morris Louis. Mark Rothko and Cy Twombly are also major influences.

As an artist, I am also concerned with exploring and questioning the inherent nature of the medium at hand. I like to explore the qualities of the paint itself, like colour, the amount of pigment, the nature of different pigments, the flow of the medium and the shapes that form naturally from the centre of gravity of the canvas. I would urge the viewer to let go and look at the work devoid of any narrative and instead rely on instinct and feeling in order to experience it. I believe in connecting emotionally through the colours and luminous forms in my paintings.

My studio, my world


My studio, where I spend most of my day, is my cocoon. Every day is a new day, every moment is sublime. I love the focus and energy that my studio gives me.

And later on, when my 3 year old little girl comes home, it becomes a collaborative space where she joins me in her quest to understand and take part in the joy of creation.
