Works on Paper

I also like to make detailed works on paper. I make these works simultaneously while working on the bigger canvases. It gives me a sense of contrast, of gesture and scale to draw from. It is a continuous cycle of one style informing the other. The essence of the paper works are derived from Magical Realism. While these works depict the strange ironies, realities and idiosyncrasies that form a part of our lives and psyche, they are invaded by magical elements that are a bit too strange to believe. This often blurs the lines between fantasy and reality. The gestures and marks I use here are reminiscent of stitching, embroidery, absorption of dye on fabric and other detailed mark making that forms a part of the library of gestures of a textile designer or craftsman. As an artist, I thoroughly enjoy making these works and alternating between the two styles.
