STATEMENT
My work is abstract and process oriented. It is about the manipulation of the mediums and canvas available to me in the moment. It is not bound by explanations in the traditional sense. I like to do away with narrative representation and focus instead on a highly intuitive process. The process of making itself is meditative for me. Through my process, I search for truth and equilibrium. I like to question the inherent nature of the tools handed to me as a painter by playing and observing various aspects, such as the different quality of pigments, the different mediums, colors and viscosity of paste. I work with massive pools of pigment that I constantly flow with or try and contain. I’m interested in finding form withing the formless and vice-versa. My work is also my response to the extremely volatile world we live in today. My work is about trying to find peace, strength and healing. It is also representative of the society’s collective subconsciousness that is trying to find balance. I believe in the universal form and formlessness of everything. My paintings try to communicate the universal truths about the human condition.
I also like to make detailed works on paper. I make these works simultaneously while making the bigger works. It gives me a sense of contrast of gesture and scale to draw from. It is a continuous cycle of one style informing the other. The essence of the paper works is derived from Magical Realism. While these works depict the strange ironies, realities and idiosyncrasies that form a part of our lives and psyche, they are invaded by magical elements too strange to believe. This often blurs the lines between fantasy and reality. The gestures and marks I use here are reminiscent of stitching, embroidery, absorption of dye on fabric etc. As an artist, I thoroughly enjoy making these works.
